Space East appoints new Space Ecosystem Champion to support businesses with their funding, growth & scale needs.

Space East are pleased and excited to announce that we have appointed Victoria Christmas in the new role of Space Ecosystem Champion for the Space East region.

Funded through the UK Space Agency Ecosystem Development Programme, the role will offer clear and expert business support advice to a wide range of organisations, primarily those based within the local space cluster. This support involves guiding these organisations on the most appropriate business support programmes for their growth ambitions, as well as providing information on how to access broader funding and commercial opportunities across the UK’s Space Ecosystem.

Victoria has worked in the space industry for the last ten years unlocking funding opportunities for companies to develop new products and services. Her own bidding career spans twenty years across defence, commercial and academic sectors and she is an award-winning bid professional, a trained mentor and a STEM Ambassador with a passion for developing capability in others.

She will also be working closely with other Champions and Ambassadors across the UK Cluster Network to map opportunities and develop a consistent approach for businesses to engage providing long-term benefits for the organisations we support.

Small business, big savings: EPO Microentity Discounts

In April 2024 the European Patent Office (EPO) launched a scheme offering a 30% discount on the main patent prosecution official fees to applicants meeting a defined set of ‘micro entity’ criteria.

The initiative was designed to help smaller and more inexperienced businesses with what can be challenging costs for early stage applicants in filing a European patent application. Since before the launch of this scheme, some applicants with a residence/principal place of business in a European Patent Convention (EPC) State have been able to benefit from language-related reductions on selected fees in relation to non-EPO language filings. However this newer ‘micro entity’ initiative is advantageous in offering reductions on a wider range of fees and significantly – the nationality and domicile of applicants are irrelevant to eligibility criteria, making it particularly useful for priority filings from further afield.

The discounts are relevant to direct EP national filings, as well as international applications where the EPO is a designated or elected office.

Who is eligible?

Entities must meet the definition of a ‘micro entity’ to apply for the discounts. The EPO defines the following three categories of what a micro entity is:

1. A ‘microenterprise’

–      This is defined as a company that has:

  1. less than 10 full-time persons and;
  2. a total annual turnover and/or annual balance sheet that does not exceed EUR 2 million.

 

2. A ‘natural person’

–      i.e. an individual.

 

3. A non-profit organisation, university or public research organisation.

 

Further Requirements

Additionally the following must be met:

  • The same person must have filed less than five EP applications in the last five years:

These fee reductions are not available if five or more EP/Euro-PCT applications have been filed by the same person within the five years immediately prior to:

  • EP application (in the five years prior to date of filing)
  • Euro-PCT application (in the five years prior to date of entry into European phase)

An aim of this ‘filing cap’ is to support the more inexperienced users of the system, so the outcome of the previous applications is irrelevant.

  • If multiple persons are filing the application – each applicant must fulfil the required criteria.

What fees are reduced?

Once the eligibility criteria has been met, a 30% discount is available on the below fees:

  • filing fee;
  • European/Supplementary European search fee;
  • examination fee*
  • designation fee;
  • grant fee;
  • renewal fees.

For example, an examination fee of €1915.00 (correct as of 14 July 2025) would be reduced to €1340.50 euros – saving €574.50 for applicants.

*Furthermore in the case of a Euro-PCT application where the EPO acted as ISA in the international phase – then in the EP national phase, micro entities are eligible for the examination fee to be further reduced by 30% of the effective international search fee.

The risks for not meeting the eligibility criteria

Whilst a hugely useful scheme to take advantage of wherever possible, it’s important to carefully check eligibility is met before claiming – as claiming where not valid can have severe consequences on an application. However this very much depends on the scenario – examples of which are detailed below:

–            Scenario A – Changes occur that mean the applicant no longer meets eligibility criteria for the discounted fees

  • Before the discounted fee is claimed
  • Any changes affecting eligibility criteria must be relayed to the EPO.
  • After the discounted fee is claimed
  • Post-fee changes in eligibility are not taken into account for the specific fee already paid. Future fees would be affected however.

–            Scenario B – Discounted fee is claimed, but applicant does not meet micro entity criteria:

  • The application may be deemed withdrawn as it is viewed as an underpayment i.e. not meeting the legal requirements. If this does occur, depending on the situation, it may be possible to pursue further processing or reestablishment of rights to rescue the application – but it is highly recommended to avoid this scenario by taking care to assess criteria are met in advance.

–            Scenario C – Discounted fee is claimed, but applicant exceeds the filing cap limit on previous EP applications filed:

  • An applicant will be given two months from the date of an invitation by the EPO to rectify the fee difference. The EPO carries out random checks while the application is still pending.
  • Re: renewal fees – the usual six month grace period would apply.

You can still make a declaration after an application is filed and benefit from the discount on any future eligible fees that have not yet been paid – ask the attorneys at ip21 for assistance and we’ll be pleased to help.

The EPO may request evidence where there is any reasonable doubt on eligibility so applicants should be prepared to provide this. As a matter of caution and efficiency, we are recommending filing evidence with the declaration where possible.

Apply for funded cyber security consultancy support and/or a Cyber Essentials/plus assessment and certification

The threat to space is real and coming increasingly closer to the UK space industry as attempted breaches have demonstrated.

Demonstrating a commitment to security is critical to the ongoing success of any business.

Successful applicants can receive up to 3 days from a cyber security professional funded by the UK Space Agency.  This can be virtual or at a place of business (UK) depending on requirements.

Applicants can also receive a Cyber Essentials and/or Cyber Essentials audit, assessment and certification.  Achieving any recognised standard of cyber security will reassure customers that you are working to secure your IT against cyber attack and make your company more attractive to new business in a growing competitive international marketplace.

Additionally, UK-domiciled organisations with a turnover under £20m achieving Cyber Essentials covering their whole organisation are entitled to free Cyber Liability Insurance (subject to terms).

What you will receive from a cyber security consultant

Successful applicants can receive up to 3 days from a cyber security professional funded by the UK Space Agency.  This can be virtual or at a place of business (UK) depending on requirements.

 

Work undertaken can include:

  • Interpretation of designs to understand how IT infrastructure is currently architectured in order to identify any security flaws.
  • Advice regarding security assessments & testing, asset security and software development security (does not include hands on security testing such as penetration tests).
  • Company or System Security Governance reviews
  • Review and recommendations on Company or System Security Policies and Processes
  • System security requirements and development support
  • High level risk assessments and risk assessment review, including recommendations for mitigating actions
  • A written report detailing findings, vulnerabilities and recommendations.
  • In person or virtual meetings as required, to present findings, assist with remediation and risk management planning.

 

 

What you will receive through the Cyber Essentials programme

  • You can receive up to 3 days of time from an experienced cyber security consultant as above.
  • A report of recommendations stating how to upgrade any areas of your systems that doesn’t meet the necessary Cyber Essentials accreditation standards.
  • Once a suitable and reasonable agreed period to remedy the improvements has passed, the final assessment against the relevant Cyber Essentials framework will then be undertaken.

 

The above consultancy, audits and assessments are fully funded by the UK Space Agency.

(Corrective actions/recommendations are at own cost and not covered by the funding in this programme)

Applying organisations must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an SME involved in space sector activity (less than 250 employee headcount)
  • Have a manufacturing or operational presence in the UK (includes NI)

Applications from micro/start-up businesses are particularly welcomed.

Member Spotlight: Zanshuri

Zanshuri is the nexus of many things.

Begun in January of 2010 as a computer hardware business, our focus was on designing and building the most energy efficient computer systems possible. We wanted to produce systems that would find a place in emerging economies, those with less than perfect electrical grid provision, as well as what we felt was a growing interest in off-grid data capture solutions.

The growing interest in green solutions proved that we were on the right track. Our systems found homes in areas as diverse as finance, trading, healthcare, construction, CAD, education, emergency services and disaster response to name a few. We were always seen as a niche operator however, and of course, we wanted to be more than that.

So, we developed retro-engineering solutions which would allow our patented energy-recovery designs to work within the chassis of servers and desktop systems which were being produced by the established manufacturers, e.g Dell, HP and so on.

We had limited success in this. Although our solutions were indeed capable and effective, the wider economic interest was not all that we hoped it might be.

Throughout this time, advances in technology and several political upheavals were slowly moving things into our favour. Computers were becoming not only more powerful, but also more portable. Our laptop sales were consistently rising, and that did not go unnoticed. Whilst we were able to secure efficiencies in laptop power consumption, the differences were not as stark as those we devised in the desktop and server space.

So I decided to pivot a significant element of our R&D budget to the development of datacentre systems. The Zanshuri Gamma was our blade server design which offered comparable performance to the most powerful blade solutions in the industry, whilst using a third of the energy. An impressive achievement in and of itself.

In going on to build a datacentre, fully populated with Zanshuri Gamma systems, not only was the resulting solution fully capable, but it also placed significantly lower demands on the environment. It did not require elaborate cooling as Gamma generates very little heat; it was not dependent on datacentre specific architecture to manage air and our compact design with a focus on solid state technology also meant our racks were physically lighter than equivalent systems.

From a programming perspective, we have leaned heavily on Unix-based software to allow a level of resilience which is difficult to match using MS-flavoured options. And by working with our clients to use co-location services and client-side data processing, coupled with server-side storage and replication, our localised energy consumption is even further reduced.

We knew we were onto something when we attracted the attention of organisations looking to develop the most cutting-edge Large Language Models and AI solutions. The massive volume of data produced through this work required unheard of storage capacity and demanded a level of resilience exceeding 99.9% uptime.

Today, our focus is on delivering massive data storage capability to our clients, with solutions currently in the exabyte range.

We continue to deliver on all fronts and are excited to be onboarding clients looking further afield than even the atmosphere we live in. Space exploration was not something we thought we might be part of, when Zanshuri was a baby.

Now, it’s simply the next page of our story.

Aerospace’s Quietest Achievement: Safety in Human Spaceflight

A Paradox Worth Noticing

Spaceflight was once synonymous with tragedy. From the earliest launches in the 1960s, the risk of death was ever-present and sometimes brutally realized on live television. For decades, fatalities defined public perception: astronauts and cosmonauts who paid the ultimate price for pushing humanity beyond Earth.

Today, the picture is very different. More people are flying into space than ever, aboard government spacecraft, commercial capsules, and even as tourists, but for over 22 years not a single astronaut or cosmonaut has been lost. Since Columbia’s loss in 2003, more than 150 crewed missions have flown, over 500 individuals have travelled into orbit or on suborbital flights, and humanity has logged millions of hours in space, all without a fatality.

This is the quietest triumph of modern aerospace.

 

Exploration Written in Blood

The history of human spaceflight is punctuated with tragedy. In the first four decades, 21 astronauts and cosmonauts lost their lives.

  • Apollo 1 (1967): Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee perished in a cabin fire during a launch pad test.
  • Soyuz 1 (1967): Vladimir Komarov died when his parachute failed on re-entry.
  • Soyuz 11 (1971): Georgi Dobrovolski, Viktor Patsayev, and Vladislav Volkov suffocated after cabin depressurization — the only humans to die in orbit itself.
  • Challenger (1986): Seven astronauts were killed just 73 seconds after liftoff.
  • Columbia (2003): Seven more were lost when the orbiter disintegrated on re-entry.

Each incident shocked the world and forced agencies to confront uncomfortable truths: space is unforgiving, and safety must be earned.

 

Columbia: The Turning Point

Columbia’s loss was both an ending and a beginning. A piece of insulating foam broke off during launch, puncturing the orbiter’s wing. The damage went undetected. Sixteen days later, Columbia disintegrated on re-entry.

The investigation revealed sobering truths: organizational culture and the normalization of risk were as much to blame as technical failure. NASA admitted that hard-won lessons from Challenger had not been fully embedded.

But Columbia also marked a shift. The Shuttle was retired, new vehicles were designed with safety first, and independent review processes were strengthened. International cooperation on safety became the norm, not the exception.

Since that day, no human has been lost in spaceflight.

 

The Safety Revolution

This safety record is no accident. It stems from deliberate changes in both engineering and culture.

  • Redundancy. Modern spacecraft carry multiple independent systems for power, life support, and communications. A single failure no longer spells disaster.
  • Escape systems. Unlike the Shuttle, today’s capsules like Soyuz, Dragon, and Starliner can pull crews away from a failing rocket. In 2018, Soyuz MS-10’s booster failed; the escape tower fired, and the capsule landed safely. “The system that saved our lives was designed decades ago but worked exactly as intended,” astronaut Nick Hague later said.
  • Simulation. Millions of mission profiles are now run virtually before a launch, catching weaknesses long before crews are exposed.
  • Culture. Agencies share lessons rather than hide them. NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, JAXA, and private players like SpaceX operate in a culture where transparency is essential. NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel ensures complacency is challenged, and engineers have formal channels to dissent.

The Silent Triumph

Compared to headlines about Mars ambitions or giant rockets, this story rarely makes front pages. But the absence of tragedy is itself a milestone.

Across hundreds of ISS (International Space Station) missions, multiple commercial flights, and even space tourism, human lives have been safeguarded.

This mirrors aviation’s evolution. Commercial flight became safe not by chance but by embedding lessons from every accident. The nuclear industry likewise built rigorous cultures to prevent rare but catastrophic failures. By comparison, two decades without a spaceflight fatality is extraordinary.

The greatest achievement is not a rocket or a station; it is the silence of catastrophe.

 

Commercial Spaceflight: Promise and Risk

The rise of commercial crew and tourism adds both hope and complexity. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon has carried dozens of astronauts. Boeing’s Starliner is part of NASA’s redundancy strategy. Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic have opened the edge of space to paying passengers.

But this raises new questions: how do private operators balance cost pressures with safety culture? Unlike government agencies, they answer to investors and customers. Regulation is also lighter, particularly for suborbital flights. As the industry scales, ensuring that today’s safety culture extends into commercial operations will be a defining challenge.

 

The Next Frontier

Low Earth orbit is relatively forgiving. The ISS is only 400 km away; if something goes wrong, crews can be home within hours.

The Moon and Mars are another matter. Deep-space missions multiply the risks: radiation, long-duration isolation, communication delays, limited abort options. Escape towers and redundancy will not be enough on their own.

There are also questions of ethics and governance. Who sets acceptable risk levels for lunar and Martian missions? How do agencies and private companies coordinate safety standards? Should we establish an international framework, akin to the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) in aviation, for deep-space human exploration?

On the ISS, multinational crews already rehearse fire, depressurization, and medical emergencies together, cross-training on Soyuz and Dragon alike. These practices are small but powerful signs of how an international safety culture looks in action.

Imagine a Mars mission where a crew member develops appendicitis halfway to the Red Planet. In Apollo’s day, the best option might have been hope. Today, redundancy in medical training and contingency planning would be part of the mission design. That contrast illustrates how far safety culture has evolved — and how essential it will be beyond Earth orbit.

 

Carrying the Safety Legacy

We must not forget the 21 astronauts and cosmonauts who gave their lives for exploration. Their sacrifice is not a footnote but the foundation upon which today’s safety is built.

At the same time, aerospace professionals must recognize that this triumph is fragile. It rests on vigilance, humility, and collaboration. Safety is not a box to tick but a culture that must be renewed and adapted as humanity pushes outward.

 

The True Measure of Achievement

The quietest triumph of the past two decades is not a new spacecraft or a record-setting mission. It is the absence of tragedy. Space has become safer, not because risk has disappeared, but because past lessons are written into every design, every simulation, every launch.

The responsibility now lies with us — engineers, scientists, policymakers, explorers — to carry that silence of catastrophe beyond low Earth orbit, to the Moon, to Mars, and beyond.

In the end, the true measure of achievement is not how far we travel into space, but how safely we bring our people home.

The ESA Proposal Advice Service (ESA PAS)

What is it? 
ESA PAS is a new initiative from UK Space Agency designed to support UK-based organisations bidding for European Space Agency contracts. It is designed to improve the quality, completeness, strategic alignment and consistency of bids – thereby aiming to strengthen the bidder’s application for funding – by providing free, non-technical advice to organisations through a thorough review of their draft bid (before submission).
Who is it for? 
The service is open to UK-based organisations, such as start-ups, SMEs, academic institutions, mid-caps, primes, and consortia.
Organisations may be bidding as prime (directly to ESA) or as a subcontractor into another organisation or as part of a consortium – either is eligible for ESA PAS.
A set of criteria has been established to enable prioritisation, however, we will try and accommodate all applicants, if possible.
 
How does it work?
ESA PAS focuses on improving the clarity, structure, and strategic alignment of proposals by identifying common errors and areas for improvement. This is done by a thorough review of the draft bid submission (all volumes), read alongside the ITT/RFP. Detailed feedback is provided giving recommendations for improvements, for example highlighting inconsistencies and common mistakes.
All information submitted to ESA PAS is treated in strict commercial confidence. It is not shared with any third parties outside of the UK Space Agency and its ESA PAS delivery partner KI Bid Consulting.
How to apply:
Organisations should apply as soon as they have taken a decision to bid for a specific opportunity.
To apply to use ESA PAS, organisations must complete the triage form. Triage forms are reviewed weekly, and successful applicants will be invited to upload their draft proposal to a dedicated UKSA portal (only accessible to the applicant and UKSA/KI Bid Consulting) roughly one week before the submission deadline.
Detailed feedback specific to the reviewed bid will be provided to the organisation roughly four days prior to the submission deadline, allowing time to integrate recommendations into their proposal.
Specific dates are communicated as part of the onboarding process – and we understand that bids can be stressful and time-pressured, so we work as flexibly as possible to accommodate bid extensions and last-minute changes.
Applicants can request a verbal feedback session in addition to written feedback if they wish to discuss the comments or ask further questions.
Points to note: 
Typically, the most benefit from ESA PAS comes at the full proposal stage – but if help is required at an earlier proposal stage (APQ, outline), organisations can get in touch to discuss.
The eligibility criteria have been set up to enable prioritisation, but where possible, we will try and review as many bids as possible – so even if organisations don’t quite meet all criteria, apply anyway.
If the opportunity being bid for requires a UKSA letter of support (it will state this in the ITT/RFP), organisations must have this in progress with the relevant programme team at UKSA. This check is done by the ESA PAS team prior to onboarding to avoid nugatory work.

Those comprehensive Cleanroom Service Plans are usually composed over one, three or five-year cycles.

UK Space Clusters, a response to: UK space sector bolstered with government reforms to boost growth and cut red tape.

Dear all, you may have seen today’s announcement regarding significant changes to the UK space sector’s administrative structure. The functions of the UK Space Agency will be transferred into the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), with its work continuing within the department.

At this stage, there are no immediate implications for the clusters or our ongoing activities. We remain committed to our mission: supporting and promoting space innovation, economic growth, and collaboration across academia, industry, and government within our regions and across the UK as a collective. Our relationships with former UKSA teams, now transitioning to DSIT, will continue unchanged in the short term.

We will maintain close engagement with key stakeholders in DSIT, as well as our partner organisations, to ensure that the priorities of the Space East space community are recognised and supported throughout this period of change.

UK Space Agency CEO Paul Bate has expressed optimism about the transition, viewing it as an opportunity to strengthen the UK’s strategic focus in space policy and delivery. He said:

“I strongly welcome this improved approach to achieving the government’s space ambitions. Having a single unit with a golden thread through strategy, policy and delivery will make it faster and easier to translate the nation’s space goals into reality.

“In coming together, the UK Space Agency and space policy colleagues are building on the firm foundations of economic growth and capability development laid in recent years, including cutting-edge missions, major national programmes, and the regulations that enable UK launch and leadership in space sustainability.

The Government has announced that it will merge the UK Space Agency and the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology’ Space Directorate into one combined unit within the Department. The merger will be completed by April 2026.

Commenting on the news of the merger, UKspace President Alice Bunn said that bringing policy, strategy and delivery back together into a single unit – this time at the heart of government – should consolidate and strengthen the Government’s space interests.

UKspace has highlighted for some years that space is too fragmented across departments – and has been actively championing a more coordinated approach.  The government has responded, outlining a “One Government” approach aimed at bringing closer alignment across its core space activities. This ”One Government” approach is a positive development; bringing the two largest elements of the civil space landscape back together, under the UK Space Agency banner, is an important first step, providing a more straightforward set of interfaces for the sector and our international partners to engage with.  To derive maximum benefits, the joint unit must also be tasked and empowered to drive closer alignment of space interests across the whole of DSIT and its other delivery agencies such as UK Research & Innovation.

Notwithstanding this merger, space interests remain split across multiple Government Departments, and UKspace believes that this still requires more powerful coordination.  Success will result in coordinated and scaled activities with a clear focus on delivering national capabilities. UKspace will actively engage with Government through the merger process,  championing our members’ and the wider sector’s interests, with a clear focus on ensuring that we maximise the contribution space makes to our nation’s prosperity, safety and security.

 

 

Isopod Rapid Cleanrooms – the elite modular systems saving your host building from unwanted modifications

THE GUARDTECH GROUP are providing an elite solution for clients who need a high-performance modular cleanroom but cannot modify their host building in any way.

Isopod Rapid Cleanrooms, the group’s flat-pack, quick-assembly cleanroom installation brand, are changing the face of modular cleanroom provision.

Isopods – which usually come in standard-sized, smaller-scale configurations – are commonly procured as bespoke units in order to meet the varying needs of the Guardtech Group’s diverse client base across Life Sciences and High-Tech Engineering.

A recent installation, for Micro-electronics innovators working on quantum solutions, saw Guardtech install a stunning, bespoke 60sqm Isopod in a super-tight host room at their premises in Berkshire.

Because of the complex nature of the project – which featured ducted fume hoods, DI water and nitrogen, argon and CO2 outlets – the client would usually have required a traditional modular cleanroom installation.

But the Guardtech Group Design Team were under strict instruction not to make any alterations or modifications to the host building – such as drilling holes for wall panel floor track or installing a suspended ceiling.

Isopod – robust, free-standing units utilising a stainless steel framework and standard, high-performance cleanroom panels – provided the ideal solution.

Isopod Rapid Cleanrooms Manufacturing Director Michael Burton said: “Isopod is unrivalled when it comes to providing the same level of performance and quality as a traditional modular cleanroom, only in a free-standing module.

“This means our clients can have all the benefits of our elite modular systems – without having to make any modifications to the rooms in which they’re situated.
